Nothing exciting happened to me during the second world war. I served 5.1/2years in the A.T.S. I remember the day I joined up, a group of girls, all about my age (17.1/2)and all leaving home for the first time, were collected at the railway station and taken in a Bedford troop carrier to our depot. It was dark, we were all feeling lonely when a Welsh girl started to sing 'Home Sweet Home' - I don't think there was a dry eye on board!
Another thing I remember when travelling around the country is the miles and miles of army vehicles parked on the grass verges underneath the high hedges and overhanging trees, so that they were hidden from the air.
I also remember going as lookout on a tank-transporter to Liverpool docks and seeing for the first time children playing the street with bare feet!
