The most profound memories are of lost loved ones - My two elder sisters Winnie and Magsie worked in the Royal Ordnance Factory in Kirkby, Merseyside and on 23rd December 1942,as usual, they left home to go on the night shift. They worked together in the powder room.
They began working at 10 o'clock and just a few minutes later there was an explosion. Winnie, whose married name was Lee and was the wife of a serving soldier was badly injured, but Magsie, who was 23, was killed outright.
You can imagine what sort of a Christmas our family had making the funeral arrangements for Magsie aswell as visiting Winnie in Walton Hospital.
Magsie was buried in Ford cemetery on New Year's Eve and I am happy to say that Winnie survived her injuries.
My mother recived a letter from King George VI saying Magsie died like a soldier at the front line.
After more than half a century the sterling effort of women during World War II was officially marked with a commemorative statue, otside the Ministry of Defence after lobbying by former Speaker Betty Boothroyd.
