I worked at Ransomes and Rapier during the war. I lived in Chevalier Street in Ipswich, and my sister Olive lived in Bramford Road. I remember one night during an air-raid, my sister and I were in the shelter at 15 Chevalier Street. My sister who was pregnant at the time went into labour. I believe the worry about the bombs brought on the baby. She was helped out of the shelter and taken into a nursing home in Wingfield Street. There were no beds left. The baby was born very prematurely, weighing less than three pounds. The Midwife wrapped the baby in cotton wool from head to toe and placed him in front of a radiator to keep him warm. Two days later I had to go to London to start nursing training, but was very privileged to see him before I went.
He grew up to become a local headmaster, and have two daughters of his own.
