Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
My father, Richard Leese was, I think, a motorcycle messenger. At some point he was run over by a tank, which broke his collarbone; luckily he was pressed into mud which prevented worse injury. The interesting thing is that I didn't learn this from him. He never talked about his wartime experiences. I and my brother knew he'd been to war only because some of our cutlery came from Germany (presumably looted), and we had german binoculars and a camera, probably obtained the same way. He would only say of people who had European holidays in the 60's and 70's - "I wouldna go. I went all through there in th'war". He did not seem to realize that he was there at an unfortunate time and that things would be different now.
