At 19 years of age, I met my husband whilst on holiday in Northern Ireland staying with Ruth and Nel, the daughters of Rev. Parker. One day, the three of us went for afternoon tea, the large tearoom was very busy and there was one table at the far side of the room which had spare seats, so I politely asked the RAF officers if we could share the table with them. As I sat down my broach fell to the floor, so I bent down to pick it up just as Douglas did and our eyes met!
Doug overheard us talking about going to the cinema that evening to see 鈥淕one with the Wind鈥 so he asked if he could accompany us. There were queues to the cinema everywhere but when the commissioner came out he selected people in pairs, Ruth and Nel were chosen and before I knew it Douglas had grabbed my arm and we were being ushered into the cinema. At the end of the evening Nel invited Doug to join us the next day for a picnic in the country. It was a most wonderful day.
After seeing each other only four times we decided to get married. Only 11 months after our wedding Doug was posted to Kidlington in Oxfordshire, as I couldn鈥檛 go with him I went to live at his parent鈥檚 in Bakewell, Derbyshire. After a year Doug returned and we moved to Theale near Reading where we lived with Mr & Mrs Brocks before being offered a cottage of our own. The cottage was delightful it had electricity and a water pump outside. I took on some clerical work at a local factory and was paid 拢3.10 per week. Unfortunately, no sooner had we got settle in our lovely cottage, Doug got posted again.
