I lived in Cirencester during the war; in fact refugee's lived near by. In my playing area which was all over the fields in front of our house, if my mother wanted me she would ring a bell and I knew it was time to come home. On this occasion she rang the bell and me being the youngest of us all, I was told to go home and find out what it was she wanted. When I got home mum said the war was over and I ran back and told everybody. We could hear the people in the town cheering; they said to me because the war is over you can have a cigarette, I was twelve. I packed up six months ago aged 71!
