My father worked in Belgium as manager of Schweppes, first in Antwerp, then Genval near Brussels. The war 1939 to 1040 was called the Phoney war as troops stayed behind Maginot Line and German border until in May 10th 1940 the invasion of Holland and Belguim began. I was wakened by the bombing. we had not had our warning from the Consulate to advise us to return to England. Then tuesday 14th, the british troops took over our flat and factory, gave us quarter of an hour to collect a few belongings, and start on a journey to find a port. We arrived in Calais, Dunkirk on 24th May and boarded HMS Venemous to Folkstone, to the best cup of tea I have ever tasted! The calm effeciency of the navy made me decide I would join the Wrens, which I did, until I was discharged to shore, because I wsas pregant.I watched the VE celebrations as I was pushing the pram.
