My father, Frank Eppes, PFC United States Army Air Corps, stationed at Burtonwood Air Base from about 1942 until 1945 told the following story several times to me during his life.

He was given the duty to drive a tracker trailer rig ( possibly a tanker ) from one place to another and as training goes he was not the best driver of a tractor and trailer rig. While going through a small town, he was not able to make the turn that he needed in the centre of town and as such he proceeded to wedge the truck into an impossible position from which he could not move it without doing damage to the shops on the corners of the intersection.
I am sure that the truck stopped traffic in several directions and it was quite a mess. Someone in town remembered that there was a skilled driver somewhere close by. This man was retreived and solved my father's problem in short order.
My father was a circuit court Judge for the State of South Carolina in the USA for many years. He had to travel a lot and this experience gave him a good respect for the skills of the truck drivers who are at the backbone of the US economy.
I do not know in which town this occurred. If anyone knows the story, I would love to know where it happened.
