Was courting for four years. We both worked in the same place and I biked home from work with her. We'd been courting for four years when I was called up. Her father said to Kathleen: "tell Cyril it's alright with me if you want to get married before he goes". So she came to me and I said "Well, shall we?". So we did! Got married in 1940, 11th May. I then went to HS Collinwood Training Centre. Twelve weeks there. First time the sirens went off we had to go into the Nissan huts which had soil on top and corrugated iron. That was at dawn. I heard one coming down. Course it went bump. I said "It ain't gone off". Then we saw the mess, the canteen with all its entrances blown to bits. It dropped five more bombs, it must have been hit. Dropped them all in a row like that. Jettisoned them without aiming at anything. When they are hit they just jettison the load. I was in the North sea. Anywhere up to Scotland down to Harwich. To Windsor then on Russian convoy from there. Then I went to America to pick the sweeper up. When it was in dock it took you anywhere you wanted so I said "where am I going?". They said "it's to America to pick a ship up". I had two months in America and two months in Canada which was ideal.
