I lived on Leechmere road near Tunstall Hill. One day, two land mines were dropped at the base of the hill. They did not explode but the vibrations blasted us from one room to the next! Later on, the Bomb Disposal Warden came round to check the houses had been evacuated - they hadn't! He immediately told everyone to go incase the bombs had a delayed reaction and exploded. My mother took us for a walk in the cemetary - very fitting! We were gone a couple of hours and later eturned home when they decided it was safe. My oldest sister, Myra, had been working at the hospital. They had told her that the whole of Leechmere Road had been wiped out. She was terrifyed of what she would find when she arrived home - if it was still there. To her elief, she found that everyone of the gouses were still intact, and we were all alive and well!
