I was only one when the war broke out and I was taken to live with my Grandmother in Yorkshire.
My dad volunteered to go in RAF. He was an electrical engineer and serviced planes. He also took the pilots up to make sure it was safe. After the war was finished he joined up again. The war placed a strain on my parents marraige and they separated.
My Dad was awarded medals during the war and now my young Grandson has got them and wears them to the cenotaph.
I remember the rationing during the war and the British restaurants. I remember when staying with my Aunt she was eating a bacon sandwich and I asked her where mine was. She told me that I had eat mine yesterday! My Uncle used to get me to go the shop for bread. He used to say ask for a stale one as you eat too much bread when it is fresh.
I was asleep in my cot when I head what I thought was a doodlebug explosion. It didn't hit us though. I can remember it even though I was only a baby.
