I joined the Home Guard at 18. I was about the same size then as I am now (5’2)

They were very keen on teaching us unarmed combat in case we came into contact with a German parachutist.

My teacher’s way of dealing with this likelihood was to teach us this trick: we had to get up close to the German and bite hard onto his neck just below his ear. Then we were supposed to bring our knee up into his groin. This should disable the German completely.

Luckily I never had to put this plan into action otherwise I would have had to carry a stepladder everywhere with me!
