Uncle Bob was taking me from Liverpool to Dublin during the Blitz in 1941/42 when I was about 3. When we were on the boat we got torpedoed as the German U Boats were around Liverpool. We had to abandon the boat and were rescued by other vessels. I don't think I knew what was happening but I remember the commotion. We were taken to Dublin by the boats where I stayed until 1945. I'm not sure exactly what happened to the boat and whether it sunk.
I lived with my aunties in Dublin. There was a houseful of women. I didn't see any other family members until 1945 as my dad was in the Merchant Navy. My brother and sister were brought over to Ireland a couple of years later. Then I moved back to Liverpool to live with my dad and my brother and sister. It was quite strange as I hadn't seen my dad for about four years.
When I was in Dublin my uncle worked as an undertaker for Flanagans and he used to take me to the convent were I was taught in a furneral carnage drawn by horses. What a way to go to school!!
