鈥淏ombing of Wallasey 1941-42鈥
Aged 15 Y.O - Lancaster Avenue & Urmston Road
Brick Air-Raid shelter bombed killing 30 people in Lancaster Av. 鈥 followed next night by a mine (aiming for the Mersey) flattened the area and part of Urmston Rd where I lived 鈥 followed by an unopened incendiary Bread Basket which set fire to the whole area of Dried Timber Debri.
My father, a naval officer had left me a Helmet with which I accompanied the local ARP Warden 鈥 when the fire inferno started I helped a policeman with others to hose out the fires 鈥 I remember his name (Sergeant Smiler), a schoolfriend of my father鈥檚.
I remember sadly observing an elderly couple dead on top of the rubble.
From the rescue attempts that followed to unearth鈥 possible living, only one baby girl (alive today) and one little dog. We were bombed out of Wallasey.
My father, a Lt Commander RNR was called to command rescue attempts at eh Dunkirk evacuations.
I remember him going to southern H.Q with black hair, returning with white hair.
P.S : I tried to enlist when reached 18 y.o, but as an apprentice in Cammel Lairds I was refused as efforts in building warships e.g submarines and T.L.C鈥檚 was deemed more important skill contribution to the wars efforts.
