The day war was declared we were having a new triplex oven installed. The black old range had been removed and the new oven was sitting on the floor. It was green. The wireless was on. I was just three. I was standing in the oven with my hands on teh edge when I realised my mother and the workmen were staring at each other horrified. I didn't even dare say 'What's up?'. I heard 'War's declared' from one side and 'So we're at war' from the other. I didn't know what it meant but it was obviously serious and frightening.
