鈥淭his story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War website by Terry Cleaver of 大象传媒 Kent and has been added to the website on behalf of Beryl Turner (nee White) with his permission and they fully understand the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.鈥
It was February 1945. On this morning I went to school as usual quite unaware what that morning would bring. I was 11 years old and hoping to sit my scholarship for entry to a grammar school. At about 11am we heard a terrific explosion and many of the school鈥檚 windows were blown out and smashed. We were all told to line up in the playground and wait for an adult to come and take us home.
My cousin and I waited and waited and we were the last two, left in the playground. Finally my uncle arrived to rescue us. He told us a V2 Rocket had landed about 5 doors away from my house. The top of my house was badly damaged. My mother had a piece of glass in her back and had to go to hospital. Staying with us and on leave from the army was my cousin from Canada. He was a dispatch rider. He had injuries to his head. He had gone through the war without being wounded and then on his leave ended up hurt. I still remember the scene of ruined houses; the V2鈥檚 gave no warning whatsoever.
