I joined HMS Argus, an auxiliary air craft carrier, in Scotland. Firstly we carried out deck landing training around Scotland. Then we set off for the Mediterranean and were caught up in the North African landings in the seas around Algiers, giving cover for the American 14th Army.
HMS Argus carried Swordfish planes, Hurricanes and Seafires. (A naval version of the Spitfire)
We were shooting German planes down. I was below deck in the fighter erection office, so I do not know how many planes we shot down.
HMS Argus got bombed. One gun crew was hit and we lost six men. They were buried at sea. The ship carried on but had a damaged flight deck.
After the landings HMS Argus returned back home again.
