I was nearly 13 when the war started. I lived 4 miles from Leeds. We had no evacuees come to our school but lots of people came to stay there from the Channel Islands. I had a sister who was 3. I was very worried. I didn鈥檛 know what was happening. I thought we would win and we did. I was never hungry because I could get fish and chips. A lot of food was rationed like meat, eggs, butter, tea, cheese, sugar and clothes. You could only have a certain amount of coal too. There was no petrol because it was rationed, only for taxis. I was 19 at the end of the war and I was very happy. My sister was 9. Batteries were hard to get. You were not allowed to let light out of the window because the Germen air force would see and drop bombs on us. They dropped bombs but not where we were. My father was too old to be in the army but I was called up when I was 18.
