Whe War broke out I volunteered for the Army. After basic training I was sent to train as a Ack-Ack gun placement plotter and aimer. We were based mainly in Southampton and were billeted in Barracks only two minutes from our station which was shaped like a semi circle bunker with the gun in the front and us behind with loads of sandbags offering us some protection. We would sleep fully clothed and one night the alarm was sounded and everyone made a dash for the door.I can remember slamming into this door that had been shut.My nose just poured with blood and trying to stem the flow and running at the same time was impossible. My worry was that I would bleed all over my charts which I used to plot the incoming fighters and shout aiming instructions to the Ack Ack gunners. They all felt it funny when I shouted with my nose blocked, as if I had a heavy cold.
We would let our hair down with dances and I made many friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with after all this time.I thought romance may have been in the air but it was only when I was home on leave in Redcar that I met Harry at the Swan Hotel dance in the town who was also in the Army stationed in Scotland.
