During the war I lived in various places since I was a nurse working hard saving the lives of those in the forces. I was attached to a casualty clearing station and the air ambulances flying to France bringing the wounded back from the battlefields. It was the rationing and the shortage of food, we were deprived of an awful lot when we were young, like clothes and food.

I remember the day in 1939 when war was declared — the sirens were blowing and everybody was devastated in terms of not knowing what to expect and thinking of all the young men and women, who would be serving during the course of the war.

My only sister served in the Wrens.
