My father was stationed in Jerusalem at the outbreak of war. My first years were spent here and I attended a convent school. Later my mother, sister and myself were evacuated firstly to a camp outside Alexandria, Egypt, and then shipped in a troopship to Durban South Africa. At this time my fathers whereabouts were secret. I seem to remember my mother saying we were there several months in a hotel.
My father had been wounded and we joined the ship(The Christian Huggan) that was carrying him to return to England. Our route included crossing the Atlantic to South America onwards to Canada where we stayed two months whilst the ship had it's underside reinforced. We travelled home to the UK in convoy my sister and myself and another boy being the only children aboard this ship all the other passengers were wounded personnel. Prior to arrival in Liverpool the ship was turned back to Iceland as Liverpool harbour was being badly bombed. My father was taken to Barra Gerney Navy hospital in Bristol. We lived in Bristol a while and had to move into the Anderson shelter when Bristol and Western Super Mare were bombed. When we came out of the shelter one night our house was the only house left standing in the road. After his release from hospital my father was stationed with Bomber Command at Finningley, Yorkshire. One evening we looked up into the sky and saw enemy aircraft in the sky. All the local people thought they were ours but we knew better. The only bombs to hit that area fell that night with no loss of life. An eventful childhood.
