my mam and dad met married and seperated in the early part of the war.
mam was in the land army and dad in the royal engineers both stationed to the same place.
mam left the land army to give birth to me.i was born in september 1941 at home in durham.
dad never got the chance to see me then.after the war mam took me to see him but i cant remember that.now and again i got a little gift from him.i grew up blaming dad for not seeing me and didnt really want his gifts.
I married and had five children and dad kept in touch and by then we were great pals and i adored him and i sent him photos of the kids.
he was a very proud grandfather.
then once again he asked if i would go down to wales to meet the rest of my family.
i went to wales several times after that and i adored him.mam had died from a brain tumour and recently i lost my youngest son from the same thing.
it was while i was on my visits to my dad that he would tell me about dunkirk and other countries he served in after that but dunkirk was the one that stuck in my mind.
dad was in the 250 field company of the royal engineers under.lt.col j bennet.
when they set out to get to dunkirk it took a long time to get there and there was 150 men and when they got to dunkirk there was only 40 and most of the officers had been lost.
