My story is a very simple one about my unsung Hero(es).
To this very day, and all my future days I will give my heartfelt thanks to a Surgeon, Nurses and most of all to a Soldier (or Soldiers) who saved my Dad's life on or just before 9/10/1944, and enabled me to have and to know a most wonderful Dad for another 44 years. I would love to know their name(s), but nevertheless they often specially remembered, and none more so than on each Rememberance Sunday.
My story begins as a child aged 3 years old (born 14/9/1941) named Loretta Jackson and is about my Dad: James Frederick Jackson Army No.5883112 and known as 'Jacko'.
His certific of service shows:
2nd. Bn. Northamptonshire regiment 26/11/1932-3/7/1940. I have some photos of the boxing team, some newspaper cuttings/photos of runners including my Dad, and some snapshots of him with other soldiers during this time.
The Buffs 4/7/1940-6/7/1944.
2nd. Bn. Gordon Highlanders 7/7/1944-19/1/1946.
My Dad was wounded during his service in France(BEF)N.W.E. just before the 9/10/1944. He draged himself to a roadside and was spotted and picked by a Soldier (or Soldiers), who were passing by in a truck. They might perhaps have known him. I have the Red Cross-St. John's card he sent my Mum from Whitchurch Emergcy Hospital dated the 9/10/1944, and I also have a letter sent to him there by a soldier named W. F. Goldjurg? Army No. 6295351 2nd. Bn. Gordon Highlanders D.Coy. BLA. Some Soldier(s) got my Dad to a Surgeon who took one look at him and said something like "This stomach wound is so bad that I don't think he will make it though the night, but we will stitch his wound together anyway". To the Surgeon's amazement my Dad was still alive the next morning and he went on to live a normal life with my Mum, my Sister and I and three Grandchildren for another 44 years. He died on the 11/7/1988.
I think you will agree that my story was able to have a happy ending due to a Soldier (or Soldiers) being filled with caring and compassion to one another.
Loretta Ramswell.
