I lived in Henley Road in Ipswich. There were two lovely cottages up by the bridge, and a lovely wood behind them. I started work at Philips and Pipers. We made uniforms — the khaki ones. I would cycle to work in the mornings, it was nice and downhill in that direction. We started at eight, and worked on a conveyor belt, each adding their own bit before it moved on to the next girl. We didn’t have to do the same bit all the time, but moved around.
I remember cycling home, uphill, when a doodlebug came over. It landed at Diss, where it caused quite a bit of damage.
My mother started writing to a soldier through the Church. He came to visit when he came back on leave, and we fell in love and got married!
I remember that D-Day was the day before my 21st Birthday. I had a cake, so someone must have saved their coupons.
