M.E.F.
April 3rd 1945
My dear Phyll,
Now I am settled down O.K. in the land of the Pharaohs, I thought I would drop you a few lines. Hope you, Ken and all the family are quite OK and in the best of health. It really was a treat to see you all again, and also to see the two younger offspring for the first time. I should think that David will be old enough to take to ‘Lords’ by the time I get back from this part of the world.
Well, the European side of the war seems to be practically over bar the shouting. It seems to be about time after nearly six years doesn’t it. You might be interested to know Phyl that I am flying spitfires over here. The Spitfire really is the most wonderful plane in the world to fly, quite second to none.
This place Ismailia is about sixty miles from Cairo. The station is very comfortable and for the period I am here, everything looks as if it is going to be very pleasant and enjoyable. This may be quite the reverse of course once we get to some shocking place like Burma.
You will excuse me Phyl if I do not write to you more than once every few weeks. I always think it is best if one stores up lots of news and then releases it in one big letter.
Well Phyl, I will not keep you any longer, but expect another letter in about three weeks. Incidentally, if you scribble off a few lines don’t forget that you need only put on a 1½d (old pence) stamp and your letter will automatically go by airmail. Airgraphs and air letters are quite obsolete now, as from a few days ago.
Cheerio than and give my love to Ken.
All my love,
Your Affectionate Brother,
Joe
