In 1940 - 1943 I remember in an air raid we went to an Anderson Shelter. there was a string of bombs were dropped one of them fell on the co-op at the top of Lilburn in N/shields and also torup a large part of the road at Chirton avenue.

Some of the houses were covered in Jam from the co-op when it exploded, ther was also a night watchman killed, unfortunatly I can't remember his name.

I remember that the shelter was very damp and full of beatles. I rememeber ther were Six of us in the Shelter, which made this very cramped.

I could also here the anti aircraft returning fire at the bombers.

There was a lemnade factory on King Street in North/Shields that took a direct hit from a bomb and the machinery fell onto an Air shelter and killed some of the people inside, unfortunatly I can't remember how many.
