Lago, standard oil of new jersey, was refining crude oil which was coming with tankers from Venezuela. It was at night pitch black we had a blackout, and we were not allowed to use light. And suddenly we had bursts of light from torpedos that came from a German submarine, and we saw the ships containing oil that were in the harbor on fire. The submarines also fired torpedos on the oil tanks that were in the refinery.we had a burning refinery with people screaming in panic. My uncles who just a few hours ago arrived from Maracaibo Venezuela on their oil tanker Pedrenales were entering the house and yelling everyone get in to the car and drive to the hills on the north side of the island which was safer for the familly.
We got out of the car and we saw all the ships like fireballs floating to the westside of aruba.I started crying, and it was awful because most of the sea-men were from the island of Bonaire where my family comes from.We had British and Scottish soldiers defending us in Aruba.I remebered the funeral of a Scottish officer the comrades had their traditional uniforms and played farewell music on the bagpipes.
I send my respects to all the British and Scottish men and familly who defend a dutch colony in the caribbean
