I got called up but married in 1940. I got a house in Barnsley and worked at Beatson and Clarkes. I had to go down passed the Barnsley Main Pit yard to get to work. I had to work night shifts as well and I didn鈥檛 like going in the dark. We had to wear clogs as well. I also used to fire watch every night that I wasn鈥檛 working next to St Peter鈥檚 Vicarage.
I then left to have my son, I had three more children and I was looking after Mum as well as them.
We had to queue for most things. Wallpaper was 9d (nine old pence) a roll, people used to queue for hours.
My husband ended up in the Gordon Highlanders. I didn鈥檛 see him for three years; our little boy didn鈥檛 know his dad. When my husband came home there were no jobs
