In mid-June 1940 I was crouching over a Chemistry paper during the School Certificate examination, the equivalent in those days of the GCE. Suddenly the air-raid sirens sounded and we rushed down into the cellar.
As we waited there came the sound of a plane and a little later three distant explosions, not before however, a boy whose name escapes, had me produced from under his shirt the Chemistry textbook which we had been using throughout the year.
Needless to say, thanks to the Luftwaffe, an unexpected number of Tommy Chem's class got good marks.
We learnt later that the bombs had hit near the Powell Duffryn offices in Aberaman.
