As a sergeant with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, my father was involved in carrying supplies for the British forces. Towards the end of the war, he was based at a camp at Weedon.
They were in a camoflaged Nissan hut next to a canal. The camoflage net stretched over the adjoining canal. The hut had a central stove with a chimney going straight up. It was a very cold day and a good fire was blazing, causing the chimney to become very hot. This set fire to the camoflage net. They called the fire brigade, saying "The canal's on fire".
The fire brigade refused to come out. The date? April Fool's Day, 1944.
