Me, aged 4, in my replica uniform
When I was about four or five years of age, someone made me an exact replica of an army uniform with side cap [see photo] and I also wore army type boots into the bargain. The badge and insignia was that of the RA [Royal Artillery] and whenever my parents took me out in my uniform, which I was extremely proud of, I never failed to be given some money and would always go home with a pocket full of pennies. My favourite places to be taken were the 鈥淎irman鈥檚 Rest鈥 and the 鈥淩ed Cow鈥 two public houses near to Braunstone, which still sold beer at that time and from where I would go home with TWO pockets full of copper coins. You could say that wearing my uniform was my 鈥榬ichest memory鈥
Fourteen years later, I donned a battledress again and proudly served my Queen and Country for almost 13 years as Royal Marine.
