Dick Ingham was serving in the Eigth Army and a member of the Royal Green Howards. He served most of his time in Egypt.
Whilst in Egypt, the senior officers had their own exclusive mess and late one night Dick was called to clear up by the officers. At the end he was invited to sit down and have a drink with those that had been serving the officers. Whilst having a chat with the others he was asked where he came from and when Dick said Newcastle, he then was asked if he had a girlfriend to which he replied in the affirmative. Asked where his girlfriend lived he replied`Kent' The officer asking all the questions said he had a sister who was going out with a lad from Newcastle. Futher questions and answers followed, and when it had been established where she lived, the final question from the man who had said he was called Charlie, was "well what is her name?".
Dick replied "Phyllis".
The next remarks were "Bloody hell so you're the man that my sister is going to marry, nice to met you brother-in-law to be"

Another story from Phyllis, who lived in Crayford at the time, was that as the result of bombing she and her mother had gone to a shelter. Once the all clear had been given they came back to their home, to find a massive hole in the back garden. In the crater they could see metal sticking out. They were not sure what to think. They called for help and it transpired that a bomb had landed in the cemetery, and one of the head-stones had blown up and the metal wiring inside had landed in the crater in the garden.
