In the Irish Free State, there were shortages of tea, coffee, oranges and bananas. Also sweets were in short supply although there was no rationing [i.e. Rationbooks] or black-out. We had plenty of food, homegrown fruit and vegetables . Although there was no rationing, we were limited to certain amounts/weights for some foodstuffs. Suger was made from local sugarbeet so there was no scarcity here.

My Grandfather served in the British Army in the Boer war and Great War [Royal Dublin Fusiliers]. He took great interest in the war and was glued to the news.

A plane came down in Dublin with Germans who were interned. They sometimes came to local dances and my Grandfather used to talk to them.
