My mother told me that during the war she watched for fires from the top of Lancaster House in the centre of Birmingham.
She said that it was very tiring to stay awake all night and then by day work for the Inland Revenue. She stopped work briefly when she married my father Leslie in August 1940, but then decided to return to the office as the other alternative war work was going to the munition factories. She told me about the Anderson shelter being built in the back garden of her parents house where she continued to live. My parents did not have their own house until my father was demobbed in 1946. She told how difficult it was not having any contact from him for months on end.
