Henry was returning to his unit after a spell of home leave. He got as far as the railway station, but began to feel unwell, and then collapsed. He was fortunate to be close to an American services hospital where he was taken for treatment. He was diagnosed with meningitis and was given a drug that wasn't available in the UK. It saved his life.
