Whilst researching our allotment history to support a 'Dig for victory' day at the National Trust Lacock in Wiltshire, I was advised that one of our former tenants, now deceased, a Mr Alf Lukas, was a former German POW who whilst in the UK had fallen in love with an English girl, married and remained in Wiltshire the rest of his life. Alf was believed to have been captured in Italy and was part of an elite Panzer section.
His neighbour on the allotments was a
Mr Roger Belcher, a member of the Tank Corps who fought at Arnheim, subject of the film 'A Bridge Too Far'.
These men were the best of friends and shared a mutual love of gardening.
