In Summer 1944, at the age of 4, I was with my Mother in the centre of town. She needed to visit the hairdressers, and left me in Martin's Bank, where my Father worked. While my Father was working I wandered out of the bank and stood on the pavement outside. Then I saw my Mother on the other side of the road. A long convoy of Army trucks were driving through the town, but, on seeing my Mother, I walked across the road. My Mother screamed, but I just carried on walking. Later, I was told that I had walked under an Army truck, which had high ground clearance. The convoy was moving very slowly. My other memories of the war were "working" on an uncle's farm, where there were about 10 land girls.
