A disused railway ran past the back garden of our house from Shrewsbury out into Wales, near Oswestry, where there was a large storage depot now taken over by the US army as a bomb dump etc.
The railway was in a sad state of repair but was reqired to transport Munitions and personnel from Shrewsbury and back. This meant a major track relaying by the US Army Pioneer Corps
When they arrived at our section us kids soon got to know the several gangs involved. Thereafter we were showered with sweets chocolate Gum Butter Jam corned beef etc etc. They could not do enough for us for the two or three days they were with us. This is someting I have never forgotten and gives me a warm glow when I think about those GI's, some of whom would never return to the States, treating us strangers so kindly over 60 years ago.
