I was born in Hastings Sussex in 1938 .
My 2 brothers and sister were evacuated in the early days of the war. My father was killed in a German bombing raid in 1940 . I rember the later years of the war especially the Doodlebugs . I spent the war years as an only child until my brothers and sister came back home . I feel that I have much to tell but I do not know how to go about it. I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE ! I have recently started a Family Tree to try and learn about my Father who I NEVER knee . This is a difficult task that I have set myself . Maybe there are other people out there who have had a similar childhood . I hope that you can help me tell my story . I am not very experienced on the internet so I await your reply with great interest. Regards Jim Sadler

Message 1 - My childhood in WW2

Posted on: 07 July 2003 by Elizabeth

Hi Jim

I read your story with interest. You are of a similar age to me, just one year separates us. I wish I could help you in some way. My father died in '44 so I barely remember him and can understand your wish to know your 'roots' If I can help in anyway then please let me know. My childhood was spent in London and I too remember the doodlebugs and the V2's. Hastings isn't that far from London so I suppose that place received a fair amount of bombing too.
Regards Elizabeth

Message 1 - Hastings Central Library Resources

Posted on: 08 July 2003 by Rob Illingworth

Jim- I work in the Heritage Room at Folkestone Library. We have a wealth of local history resources that many customers do use to help find more information about family members who have connections with the Shepway district.

It may be that, although you were born in Hastings, this area was not the key one for your family in wartime?

Nevertheless, I thought that I might give you some details about the Local Studies collection in Hastings Central Library.

They may have resources such as vintage newspapers, cuttings files & photographs that may be helpful to you.

They even have a special page on the web where you can submit your enquiries online. (I shall include details of this below.) Be careful to give them as much information as possible when submitting an enquiry. (Sometimes background details can open up other ideas for resources to check.)

And don't forget that you could ring them up or visit the library (if you are able) and talk to the librarians in person

Family History
The local studies collections are frequently being used for genealogical research, and staff can help you find information. If you are a newcomer to family history you are strongly advised to read one of the many books on the subject available in the county library.

Local Societies
Details of several family and local history societies are obtainable from the staff. You may find it helpful to join one of these.

We can help with....
Histories of the county of Sussex
Books and pamphlets on individual towns and villages
Monographs on specialised topics
Maps of the county both modern and historic
Street maps and shopping maps
Geological and other specialised maps
County and town directories
Valor's lists, both current and retrospective
Census information and the international Genealogical index
Newspapers dating back to the 1740s
Cuttings collections
Periodicals
Illustrations, including prints, photographs and postcards

Online Enquiries
Use our on-line enquiry form to contact our Local Studies staff for information on any of the following:

finding out about the history of the place, or house where you live
researching your family history
writing a thesis or essay on any aspect of the history of the area
doing a school project on a local theme
What will help us answer your question as quickly as possible?

Please tell us:

what you want: be as precise as you can e.g. name a particular street you are interested in, rather than I want to know about the history of Hastings.
who you are: are you a child or an adult?
what do you want it for?: is it for a school project, university thesis, hobby or something else?
when you will need the information: give us an exact deadline!
what information you already have
where you live: Please include your email and postal address so we are able to send any information that may be useful to you or refer you to another library or organisation closer to where you live

Message 1 - Family history tips

Posted on: 04 August 2003 by L Jackson

Hello Jim

The 大象传媒 family history web pages are a good starting point:
About links

You might find the full text of "Finding Genealogy on The Internet" useful, at the following web site:
About links

Another good family history web site to try is the encyclopedic "Cyndi's List" at:
About links

I suggest starting with the "How to" section. If you have any specific family history questions click on "L Jackson - WW2 Researcher" and then on the "Leave a message" button in my personal area.

Good luck, L Jackson.

Hie Jim,

I am a university student just about to begin my second year at university studying History. My final research project is a comparasion of propaganda in the second world war and the more recent gulf wars and i would love to ask you a few questions about what you you remember about some of the posters, films, and leaflets that were around at the time of your childhood if your ok with that.

If you want to contact me then the best way to do it is to e-mail me my address is b2061867@tees.ac.uk or just leave a message here and i will check it.

Thanks for your time
