Violet (age 12) left from London Paddington to take a train to Wales. Violet arrived and went to the local school in a village called Guaun-Cae Guowen for her foster parents to be chosen. The elder children generally went with the older couples, younger children with the young couples. The whole town was Welsh speaking, this meant that the local schools were all taught in Welsh, so Violet didn't go to school. The first time she went into the house of her foster parents it was said that not a word of Welsh should be spoken while she was there. She settled in very well, and was treated like one of the family. A lot of the children were naughty because they wanted to go home. But Violet had a younger brother to look after so she had to be good. The bond between Violet and her younger brother is strong even to this day, even though he now lives in Australia.

One sad occation was when Violet wrote home to tell her mother that her younger brother wanted to go home. Her older brother came to pick him up and take hime back to London.
