One time, around 1942, through the night the sirens went to warn us of an on coming raid. My sister and I got up but my Dad wouldn't - he said if he was going to die, he would rather die in bed. We didn't like to go to the air raid shelter and leave him on his own, so we stayed in the house and we and sat, and waited and waited and waited...(for what seemed like hours) for the 2nd siren, the all clear. Eventually we decided, the siren we heard must have been the all clear and we had slept thought the first warning siren!! We felt sickened of waiting, but afterwards saw the funny side. (author laughing!)
