On occasions during the early parts of the war the Desert Rats armoured division were training in Norfolk , but then went abroad on some short jobs no details . They would sometimes be waiting at stations to go to ports before leaving on ships . You could be a long time waiting for road transport or train much the same as now then .
Some of the blokes would say can i get away and see me new baby Serg , or can i get away to London and see if me Mrs is with another bloke Serg,t .
My father had a soft streak , rare in a regimental sergeant major . He was liked by the men under him and he knew they would never let him down . And so he,d say you two off you go , but be back here in 5 hours 6pm ,we leave then . If your not back im in it and so will you be ok .Dont let me down . Off they went with big smiles to sort out their domestic troubles . My dad knew that if they could sort things out theyd be much better soldiers .
Come 6 pm theyd be back with long stories to tell , a few bottles of drink and some fags .
Off theyd all go and no one was any the wiser , but atleast my dad knew the lads were on his side and would follow him where ever. This became useful in times of battle when it was all on top .
