My father an A.R.P warden was out nightly during the blitz.During the air raids I was in the dark Anderson Shelter in the garden. One night there wewe repeared loud explosions. The piece of canvas tied to the shelter opening flapped into the air and revealed a bright fire that lit the sky.
Dad returned to the shelter to tell us the Amunition Train in Clubmoor had been hit by incendiary bombs. One by one the wagons were exploding (The brave train driver had driver the train to Clubmoor away from the Dockland area.)
The next morning I watched a sad group of bombed out people traipsing along towards ST MATTHEWS HALL to get some shelter. They were all carrying bits of pieces rescued from the raid.
(2)One Happy Memory-
Collecting schrapnel! We children boasted who had the biggest piece. To dodge under the ropes tied across the roads with "DANGER UNEXPLODED BOMB" sign was a great prank! Here we found big pieces of schrapnel to boost our collection! I kept mine in a canvas bag.
(3)SAD MEMORY-
My Fether-in-Law also a warden, recalled being by Bread Lane when a land mine was dropped leaving a huge crater (now the site of Broadway Dental Practice.)
After the raid he saw the parts of a man "LITERALLY BLOWN TO PIECES." He said he actually saw his heart on the pavement. It was still beating.
