Going on a train journey was quite an exciting adventure ,as you were likely to meet even fascinating people. I once met a French officer who introduced himself in a gentlemanly manner and as we chatted he assured me that I was the image of his girlfriend in Paris. His English was not very good ,but when he relaised that I could speak a little French we had a lovely journey, and our parting seemd quite sad.I did enjoy using my heavily accented French which became better as we chatted.
My sister became friendly with a Norwegian soldier by the name of Olaf Bonn. His good manners were quite embarrassing as he jumped to his feet and saluted every time he was spoken to by a lady . The family house was a five bedroomed semi-detached property facing on to a busy road, my mother had a lillte porch at the back with a small clothesline on which hung various items of female underwear. Olaf stood at the window ,looked out and said"I have a god view". I don't suppose he ever understood the cuase of our mirth.
One of my friends was a Polish officer by the name of Roman Paischkowski. Foolishly I gave him my telephone number, quite forgetting that the telephone was in my father's study, the Holy of Holies, where no one entered. Roman deceided to ring me and mt father answered the phone ,upon hearing a male voice and siad "who are yoy" to which Roman replied " I am Paischkowski, who are you"? Needless to say I was in great trouble,my father was so furious and went on for days ,threats of dire punishment being issued every time he saw me.
