I cannot remember when or how they came but it seemed as though they had been there a long time.
I was ten years old at the time and at the bottom of our road was a wide crescent with a wide grass area running from end to end with chestnut trees.Parked uder these trees were a mass of military vehicles, tents and various other equipment. These belonged to soldiers of the Canadian Army, the soldiers lived in some large houses commandered for the war.
I seem to remember them being a friendly lot and at that time they all seemed to smoke a cigarette called Sweet Caporal,we used to ask them for the packets because on the back they had pictures of planes they always obliged and if there was one cigarette left over in the packet that was a bonus.
I can remember them eating their food out of Billy cans and after the main course the dessert went straight in to the unwashed can.
My friends and myself spent many hours around the Canadians and we used to try and sneek in to see the film shows held in a College also taken over.
One day we went to see them and to our amazement vehicles, tents equipment and men had all gone.Rushing home we found out that it was D Day June 6th.
How many of these men made it back I wonder?
