I am the grand daughter of George Lawton and am looking for any information on him during his time in the war.He joined up on19-12-1938 after lying about his age.He was considered too old at 24,can you believe it?He joined The Royal Artillery Field Corps, but I'm not sure where he was stationed. His two best friends during the war were Dixy and Doxy.(honest)My father thinks that Dixy was a nickname and that Doxy was a real surname, who's christian name was either Fred or George, and he thinks that they may have been local lads.Staffordshire.My grandad came from New Street in Burslem(facing the side of the Roebuck)but the houses are no longer there..his wife was named Alice Lawton(nee.Hargreaves)and he had 2 children at the time of joining up,George and Sylvia. My grandmothers sister and her husband owned the oatcake shop on Waterloo Road in Burslem,Annie and Bill.During 1944,11th November my grandad had his leg blown off in Venlo,Holland and I'm looking for any information around this time especially but any informatin is valuable. He was a very proud and private man who who would'nt talk about the war no matter however much as an inquisitive I asked,so I don't really know much about his war and I'm desperate to find out.I have left a similar request on a number of web sites in the hope that somebody recognises his name or the events surrounding the 1944 incident. He was eventually discharged from the army on 26-4-1946,one month after my dad's birth. He held the rank of Lieutenant Sergeant.
It has been wonderful reading people's memories about the war in Staffordshire,us young uns haven't got a clue.
Thanks for sharing them
