We were happy to meet with 80 year old Harry Higgs and to listen with interest as he shared his memories of his war experiences.
Mr Higgs remembers that the u boats were sinking the ships which held supplies- like food and army equipment. So then the preisdent of America came to a agrement with Chrchill that something had to bedone because they were losing too much supplies.
Mr Higgs joined up in January 1943, when he was 18 1/4 years old, into the air force. He did alot of his 3 month training as a pilot in the USA & Canada, especially on the Detriot River. This was predominately on the 'V planes'. Mr Higgs also remembers having two weeks leave to help the farmers gather the harvest. He then ate very well on: pickled beetroot; sweetcorn; lobster and clam clowder. (This was an excellent feast as food was becoming scarse in the UK.) Then he was posted to Pensacola, Florida, USA, training on the large areoplane the Catalina. He returned to England as a coastal guard. Alot of his movement from one posting to another was undertaken at night to reduce the number of people knowing what was actually happening. Mr Higgs continued to tell his story which included the most memorable moment was when he was on the Queen Mary ship and saw the statue of Liberty at 5:30 am.
While being apart of the US Navy, Mr Higgs continued to travel, something that he enjoyed after the war.
We found this opportunity very interesting and learnt alot about these times. Thank you Mr Higgs for sharing your memories and time with us.
