A visit to " the pictures" in a neighbouring town was a favourite form of entertainment on nights off from my RAF fighter station in the south of England.
On this particular night ,the film was "Edison the Man" starring Spencer Tracey and I was seated at the side of the theatre opposite a side door in the building. I became engrossed in the many experiments being tried to discover a suitable filament for the newly invented electric light bulb when suddenly, the building shook and the side door was splattered with debris and stones. The house lights came on and the theatre manager explained than an exploded bomb had landed outside the theatre. He asked us to evacuate the theatre as soon as possible which we were only too happy to do.
It was many years later that I was able to watch a repeat of the old film , on tv and learned at last ,the composition of the successful filament finally discovered -but already ,I've forgotten what it was!
