I was only a child during the war, so I don't remember all that much. I do remember having to take my gas mask into school every day, and know where it was. Not that we ever used them...
I lived on a farm, and we had prisoners of war working there. They were brought in each day on a lorry - Germans and Italians. To be honest, the Italians weren't much good on the farm because they were homesick. They were very musical - you would hear them singing - but they didn't work very hard.
The Germans, though - they were excellent: really good workers.
