I was the eldest of four children and the only one who was evacuated in 1941. We were told by the school- a schoolfriend and I went together. I first felt excited to be going. We went to North Way School in Wavertree where the whole school were being evacuated. We set off with our gas masks and a few belongings but I never knew why the rest of my family did not go.
When we arrived at Llandudno, my friend and I were "chosen" by a couple of middle age. They had no children of their own. Now it became frightening. The man was a "hunchback" and the woman was VERY domineering. They used to lock us in the bedroom from early evening.
Both my friend and I were frightened, so we wrote a letter home and my father came to collect me and take me back to Liverpool. We were only there for one week. On returning home, we did not go back to school but had lessons at someone's house.
